Roland Pierik is the new Deputy Director of Research at the Amsterdam Law School. In his capacity as Dean, Andre Nollkaemper assumes the role of Acting Director of Research.
As Deputy Director of Research, Roland will be in charge of the day-to-day management of the Amsterdam Research Institute for Legal Studies, or ARILS.
He will also regularly confer with the research teams regarding the development and monitoring of quality criteria, valorisation, reporting, external evaluations, and maintaining alignment with national and UvA Research Agendas.
He will prepare the 2019 midterm review and, in collaboration with the Department of Marketing & Communications, will be responsible for internal and external communications involving research.
In addition to his appointment as associate professor (senior university lecturer) of Jurisprudence, Roland is also the director of the Paul Scholten Centre for Jurisprudence and a member of the Health Council of the Netherlands (Gezondheidsraad).
Since 2013, his research has focussed on the legal regulation of vaccinations against infectious diseases. He is currently supervising two PhD candidates: Lars Nickolson (Political Science, UvA) on classical and modern theories on the freedom of religion, and Steven Kraaijeveld (Philosophy, Wageningen) on indirect vaccination.
