A team of International Trade and Investment Law master track students reached the finals at the Pre-Moot of the Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court (FIAMC) competition that was held on 28 February 2020 in Paris. In the pre-moot finals, the UvA team consisting of Claudia Mihalcea, Manuela Staudenmann, Elias Ritzi and Veronika Bondarenko, was beaten by a narrow margin by the team of the University of Ljubljana.

Throughout their pleadings in Paris, our students demonstrated amazing pleading skills. It was truly a pleasure seeing them in action and compliments were flowing from everywhere, including from the organizers – (Vid Prislan, team coach)

The Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court (FIAMC) is the oldest and most prestigious student competition in the area of investment protection law. The Pre-Moot in Paris is organized by the International Court of Arbitration and is traditionally attended by the strongest teams, which usually end up very high at the final competition in Frankfurt. UvA’s second place at the Paris Pre-Moot is a fantastic achievement and attests to the high quality of the team. In the semi-finals, the UvA team won convincingly against the team of Moscow State Institute of International Relations, the university that delivered last year’s winner in Frankfurt.

Unfortunately, right after the announcement of the Paris winner, it was announced that the main moot court competition would be cancelled due to health risks related to the spread of the Covid-19 virus. This final round of the FIAMC competition was due to take place in Frankfurt from 2-7 March 2020.

I appreciate that this cancellation is a sensible decision to protect our students’ health. Nonetheless it is a disappointment for the team. After seeing the team’s performance in Paris, it was obvious that the UvA had a winning team this year, capable of reaching the top in Frankfurt and further improving last year’s results – (Vid Prislan)

The team and Vid Prislan would like to acknowledge the generous assistance the team received received from current and past students Gijs Verhagen, Diana Carolina Realpe, William Alexander Smith-Burnand, Kyle Varga, and Antanina Maslyka, as well as from Joost van Dam and Manish Bahl of Fieldfisher Amsterdam, who were willing to share their experience with the students.
