Will They Rise Again? Four scenarios for the future of trade unions
Econometric studies have invariably identified these conditions as propitious for union growth (Bain and Elsheikh, 1976; Western, 1997; Scruggs and Lange, 2002; Checchi and Visser, 2005). Examining the beneficial contribution of unions to lowering inequality in post-war America, Farber et al., (2021, p.39) write that Covid-related protests and union election campaigns at Amazon and Google and more recently Apple and Starbucks “recall the 1930s”, but add that “without legal or other institutional changes at the federal level translating this activity into growth in union density or coverage will be difficult”. According to Avdagic and Baccaro (2014, pp.718–19), without “the state accept(ing) that union involvement in employment relations produces positive ‘externalities’ for society and is willing to intervene in favour of unions”, the chances for union revival will be slim.
