This is the European Society for Social Drug Research’s annual book, with 21 ‘snapshots’, by social scientists working in 11 European countries. Globalisation influences not only legitimate economic sectors, but also affects developments on the illicit drug market and the proportion of those in treatment who are members of minority ethnic populations. Recent years show an almost exponential increase in the use of online data collection and analysis in social drug research and, in some European countries faster than in others, research ethic committees have come to play an important role in social drug research.

Benschop, A., Nabben, T. & Korf, D.J. (2013) Drugs use trends in nightlife and youth services in Amsterdam, 2012. Bonger International Bulletin, 3(2), 1-4.
Since 1993, Amsterdam Antenna has collected qualitative and quantitative data in order to document and analyse trends in substance use among adolescents and young adults in the city. In 2012, trendsetters within the nightlife scene are mainly using stimulating drugs. Ecstasy remains the most popular drug in the field, yet the risk of coming across a pill with a dangerously high dosage is bigger than ever before. For young people in the youth services the use of recreational substances is chiefly limited to drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes or joints. [DUTCH PUBLICATION WITH ENGLISH SUMMARY]

As of May 2012, coffee shops in the provinces of Limburg, Noord-Brabant and Zeeland were only permitted to give access and to sell cannabis products to members and hence needed to maintain a verifiable members’ list, and only residents of the Netherlands aged 18 and over were permitted to become a member. This is an interim evaluation of the implementation of the new coffee shop policy over the period May to November 2012. [DUTCH PUBLICATION WITH ENGLISH SUMMARY]

In her dissertation, Marije Wouters addresses the following questions: What consequences have formal changes in the Dutch cannabis policy since the middle of the 1990s had for the legal regulation of the cannabis market in practice? And how and to what extent do these developments relate to (developments at) the supply side of the cannabis market, the sale of cannabis at consumer level, and the consumption of other drugs?
