These are the figures as of 15 October 2022; the final national figures will be available as usual next February.

Bachelor’s intake

The number of first-year students in the Bachelor's programmes rose by 4.8%, from 8,126 last year to 8,512 this year. The number of new Bachelor's students from the Netherlands increased by 3.4%: 4,963 this year versus 4,801 last year. The international growth, at 6.7%, is stronger: from 3,325 to 3,549. In particular, the number of Bachelor's students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) is increasing: from 1,036 to 1,184 (+14.3%). The number from the EEA is increasing to a lesser extent: from 2,289 to 2,365 (+3.3%).

The majority of new Bachelor's students from the EEA come from Germany (356 students), followed by Poland (301) and Italy (262). Outside the EEA, most of the first-year students come from China (253), India (102) and Turkey (98).

Striking increases in the Bachelor's phase

The number of new students from Turkey and India is rising significantly, by 50.8% (from 65 to 98 students) and 21.4% (from 84 to 102 students) respectively. The UvA has 51 new Bachelor's students from Ukraine this year, compared to 19 last year. This year, Ukrainian students can study at the UvA at the regular (lower) tuition fee rate, rather than the institutional rate that applies to students from other non-EEA countries.

The number of first-year students in the Bachelor's phase rose most sharply at the Faculty of Humanities (FGw), from 1,509 to 1,648 (+9.2%), followed by the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), from 1,561 to 1,695 (+8.6%). The Faculty of Science (FNWI) went from 1,121 to 1,185 (+5.7%) and the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG) from 2,390 to 2,513 (+5.1%). Amsterdam Law School (FdR) fell from 889 to 808 (-9.1%).

Master’s intake

This year, there are 6,448 new students in the Master's programmes. This is 398 fewer than last year, when the figure was 6,846 (-5.8%). A drop is evident in both the number of new Master's students from the Netherlands, from 4,249 to 3,850 (-9.4%), and from EEA countries, from 1,610 to 1,569 (-2.5%). The number from outside Europe, on the other hand, rose from 987 to 1,029 (+4.3%).

The majority of new Master's students from EEA countries come from Germany (342 students), Italy (184) and Greece (116). From outside the EEA, the majority come from China (413), the United States (106) and India (69).

The intake of Master's students from the United Kingdom has declined remarkably, from 80 to 52 (-35%). There are 20 new Master's students from Ukraine, versus 17 last year.

The number of new Master's students fell most sharply at Amsterdam Law School (FdR), from 1,099 to 944 (-14.1%) and at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), from 1,376 to 1,231 (-10.5%). This is followed by the Faculty of Science (FNWI), from 1,245 to 1,163 (-6.6%) and the Faculty of Humanities (FGw), from 1,224 to 1,172 (-4.2%). At the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG), there was a slight increase: from 1,732 to 1,759 (+1.6%).

International students

Looking at all students enrolled at the UvA this academic year, an increase of 2.7% can be seen: from 41,206 to 42,324 students. Of these, 28,268 are Dutch and 14,056 are international. Of the international students, 9,142 come from the EEA and 4,914 from non-EEA countries.
