In the sector plan 2019-2024, Dutch Law Schools have committed themselves to reducing the length of PhD trajectories. To this end, the 'promotion culture' within the discipline of law must change. One of the means is to offer more room for for writing a doctoral thesis consisting of articles.

At the Amsterdam Law School, the possibility to obtain a doctoral thesis consisting of articles is not new. The faculty already had a guideline on the subject dating from 2013, and the UvA doctorate regulations has already allowed this for several years. In view of the sector plan, the faculty has adopted a renewed guideline on writing a doctoral thesis consisting of articles at the beginning of 2022.

Save the date: conference Healthy PhD Practices

The Dutch law faculties have also agreed  to organize a conference on the different cultures with regards to writing a doctoral thesis. This will take place on 16 March. The aim is to have a debate on the different cultures concerning a PhD in law (monograph versus a doctoral thesis consisting of articles).

  • Date: Wednesday 16 March 2022
  • Time: +/- 12.00 - 17.00 hrs
  • Location: Erasmus University Rotterdam (possibly also online)

The programme will consist of a plenary session, a number of workshops and a concluding panel discussion.
